Quarterback Landry Jones and the high-powered Oklahoma Sooners will open the college football betting season as the chalk that every other team wants to turn to dust. The NCAA futures odds at Bodog Sportsbook to win the 2011-12 BCS National Championship have Big 12 juggernaut Oklahoma leading the offseason pack at 4/1 odds, as Jones and primary receiving target Ryan Broyles will be looking to put enough points on the scoreboard each game to overcome any defensive shortcomings – perceived or otherwise.
Jones piloted the Sooners to a dominating 48-20 romp over the Connecticut Huskies to win the Fiesta Bowl last January, as veteran coach Bob Stoops and his troops finished the season as the sixth-ranked team in the nation. Jones threw for 4,718 yards and 38 touchdowns during the campaign, with a lofty quarterback rating of 146.3. Broyles, meanwhile, pulled in 131 passes for 1,622 yards and 14 majors. Both players will be looking to avenge the only two losses suffered by Oklahoma last season, to conference rivals Missouri and Texas A&M – both on the road. The Sooners are seven-time national champions.
Right behind Oklahoma on the futures chart is perennial SEC powerhouse the Alabama Crimson Tide, at 11/2 odds. While former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram has graduated to the NFL, junior RB Trent Richardson will take over as the workhorse in the Tide backfield and will likely join the Heisman conversation himself in 2011. Richardson has rushed for more than 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns combined during his first two seasons behind Ingram. When last seen, the Crimson Tide were easily blowing out the Michigan State Spartans 49-7 in the Capital One Bowl last January, and head coach Nick Saban will be bringing his customary blue-chip recruiting class to Tuscaloosa this fall. Alabama has previously won 13 national titles.
Other top teams that are projected to contend for this year's national title include Florida State (10/1), Oregon (13/1), Boise State and LSU (both 14/1), Florida (15/1), and Stanford (16/1). Check out all the college football futures at Bodog Sportsbook.
