NCAA Basketball Picks: Harvard Crimson vs Princeton Tigers
Saturday, February 11, 2012
by Mike Stewart
The last time Harvard Crimson and Princeton Tigers met, the Tigers defeated the Crimson in an Ivy League playoff to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson, meanwhile, were sent to the NIT as a consolation prize. This time, No. 21 Harvard enters on a nine-game win streak and has its sights set on redemption, but it won’t be easy. The Tigers hold a 127-39 advantage in the all-time series and haven’t lost at home against Harvard since Feb. 3, 1989.

Harvard Crimson (21-2): Harvard has the third-ranked scoring defense and has not allowed a conference opponent to score more than 60 points. In their last outing, the Crimson held Pennsylvania to 50 points on 32 percent shooting, including 22 percent from 3-point range. Laurent Rivard, who leads Harvard in scoring, was held without a field goal in the win over the Quakers, but Kyle Casey and Corbin Miller picked up the slack and scored 17 points apiece. Keith Wright, who leads the Crimson in rebounding with 7.7 per game, scored a game-high 16 points and had six rebounds in Harvard’s 63-62 playoff loss to Princeton last season.
Princeton Tigers (12-10): Ian Hummer and Douglas Davis lead the Tigers in scoring with 17.1 and 13.3 points, respectively. Hummer, a junior forward, scored in double figures in each of Princeton’s three meetings with the Crimson last season. Most recently, the Tigers defeated Dartmouth 59-47 to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since suffering setbacks to Bucknell and Morehead State on Nov. 25-26. The game against Harvard will be Princeton’s second Ivy League home game. The Tigers are 4-2 at Jadwin Gymnasium this season.
1. Harvard’s only NCAA Tournament appearance came in 1946.
2. Princeton has won seven of the last 10 meetings.
3. Harvard has won five straight road games, including three in conference play.
